COMMENTS AND OTHER TIDBITS
It's kind of hard to figure where to put all the pieces--this is for general comments, kind of a Cork Board in the hallway.

You do not need to be a commune member to pin a note up on the board--thanks, wjlo

KABN t-shirt

I lived in Big Lake from 1975 until the fire. I was a listener, visited the station, and had friends and acquaintences who volunteered significant amounts of time there--Jan Burson, Jim from Willow. I really, really would like to buy 1-4 of the t-shirts with the music note-big dipper logo on the front and "radio free Big Lake" on the back. If anyone knows where I could find such an item, please send me the contact info. Thanks.

thank you

I was reminded today of KABN while watching a movie about independent record stores..

I lived in Wasilla in 84-85 and discovered a lot of cool music via KABN, XTC for one. Thanks for that. It was a song called "love on a farmboys wages" It led me down a musical path that I am still staggering down today. I used to tape the shows at night.. and listen to them the next day.

anyway, I am sorry to hear it is no longer beaming out the bliss I was able to partake in.

Thank you again for brightening so many lives.
sincerely,
Jon

from the Tuesday night DJ

Tuesday nights ! Did you ever remember the "Funny Hour" 10-11pm 2200-2300 We had a short styled show similar to "Dr. Demento" Played Spike Jones, Weird Al [he was new then] and Bill Cosby. Just before the old radio shows. And sometimes "The Sheriff" dropped in and co-hosted the show ? or, how about the 2 crazy guitar KABN station ID's with the best lead guitar player on the planet "Guitar Wally" from Wasilla. "Sittin in the woods, Got KABN on the dial," were written and performed by Wildman [singined] and Wally. I will find it, digitize it and we can post it on this site! Webmaster, e mail me. Thanks for posting the site. IS Roger in Fairbanks? Is STILL Eric in Fairbanks? Does the Monday Morning Blues Man still fix my fridgerator? HECK YA ... I miss the Friday night gospel bluegrass show.

thanks

I used to listen to you guys 1982-1986 when I was stationed at Elmendorf.

One day I was talking to someone at Eielson on the phone, both of us stopped talking when we realized we were both listening to Kabn radio. (pretty good propagation through the passes)

You guys were great smilies/smiley.gif

Alaskan Dream

And a dream it was. Traveling up the Alcan with my dog and Winchester 30.30 in a little orange Datsun pickup, the year: 1980.

I was 23 and burned out on what I'd been doing and was looking to the Great Promise That Was Alaska. Some of the best times of my life were out on a roof pounding nails for a Wasilla contractor, with the radio cranked to KABN radio listening to the songs that were to become my background music for life the next three summers.

Whether catching Reds in Nancy Lake Creek, or driving over Hatcher Pass way too early in the year, there was only one station on that old cassette radio, it might just as well have been welded in place. I can't explain the feeling of being young in a Great Land, living free, working hard during the housing boom of the early '80's and just soaking it all in to my soul. And KABN always in the background. Man, where did it all go, the life, the dreams, the expanse, the thrill of living in a place where nature calls the shots and I only too happy to comply.

Yes, the subtle changes stacked one upon another to where I'm about as far away from that time and place as a man could be. I tear up with the memories flooding over me, man what a life lost, yet by it's very nature had to end for me.

If I had some of the KABN playlists from that time I'd seek high and wide until I had an IPOD loaded for days of pure pleasure, singing, listening and singing, about ALASKA....
